New Education Reforms:Basic Education now from KG to SHS- GES


The Ghana Education Service has said that Basic Education has now been extended from the Kindergarten to the Senior High School.

The Director-General of the Ghana Education Service,Prof. Kwesi  Opoku Amankwa made this revelation on Starr FM,an Accra based radio station’s morning show dubbed ‘‘Time with the CEO” hosted by Francis Abban on Monday,April 15,2019.

He said the changes are holistic and will affect every aspect of the education process of the country.

“The reforms we are interested in is the whole school reform where we consider the entire educational system and all levels. We need reforms in the content of education, teaching and other aspects. Per the new reform, basic education will mean education from KG through to SHS,” He said.

He said the new approach to studies in schools will ensure that children are able to fully grasp what is being taught bu teachers.

“Children need to be consistently assessed so the teacher, school, students and parents will know if their children are performing and acquiring knowledge as expected.He indicated.

GES Launches New Curriculum for Basic Schools

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has launched a new curriculum for primary schools in the country.

The new curriculum is to help address deficiencies in the educational system and prepare Ghanaian students to compete favorably with their global counterparts.

Director General of GES, Prof. Kwasi Opoku-Amankwa, speaking at the launch on Thursday in Accra, says the ew curriculum would take effect from the 2019/2020 academic year.

According to him, the GES has identified some deficiencies in the current curriculum.

Giving features of the new curriculum, he said, at the Kindergarten (KG) level, the number of learning areas would be reduced from seven to four.

The four areas, he said, were integrated themes including literacy, numeracy, our world, our people, and creative arts.

He noted that at the lower and upper primary, the number of subjects remains the same.

The Director-General added that “however, there will be fewer concepts and more in-depth treatment of concept in each subject.”
