Newly Trained Teachers have accused the National Teaching Council (NTC)  of forcing them to swear an oath whose code of ethics never exists.

A former TTAG General Secretary made this revelation at the Induction and Capacity Training held for Newly Trained Teachers in HO-KPODZI E.P. DELA CATHEDRAL on Thursday, 18th April, 2019.

The immediate past National General Secretary of the Teacher Trainees’ Association of Ghana (TTAG), Mr. Nicholas Kelvin Agboni accused the National Teaching Council (NTC) to have forced 2018 Trained Teachers from the Colleges of Education across the country to sign an oath whose code and ethics of practice are yet to be made public by the council.

He suggested NTC should have published the pending code and ethics of practice for prospective teachers to have clear knowledge about it  before signing.

Contradictory Renewal Period

He challenged the process when a representative of the NTC Mrs. Afia Animwoa confirmed that the council is yet to publish the code and ethics of practice to the general public.

Mr. Nicholas Kelvin Agboni also said the the statement captured by NTC officials during the induction period that “Teachers’ License when issued to individual teachers, shall be valid for three years after which the individual teacher shall be obliged to renew it” was contradictory.

According to him, the statement concontradicted an earlier communication by the executive Secretary of NTC Dr. Evelyn O. Oduro in their stakeholders meeting.

He  said “the council earlier communicated a period of four years to renew the license when issued”

He called on NTC to officially publish a white paper on the period of renewal to avoid inconsistencies in their communication.

Provisional License

He finally called on NTC to issue provisional license to all service teachers since it was communicated that, the service year shall be considered as induction period and all service teachers shall be given provisional license at the beginning of their induction/service.

”It’s almost four month when trained teachers commenced their service but NTC failed to give their professional license.” He lamented.
