Veep Amissah-Arthur opens ultra-modern language laboratory for UCC

Vice President Kwesi Amissah-Arthur has reiterated the need for the study of the French language and other international languages to enable the country to be competitive in the globalised world.

In view of this government will continue to resource the countries universities and other tertiary institutions for the teaching and learning of languages.

Vice President Amissah-Arthur said this when he inaugurated an ultra-modern language laboratory for the University of Cape Coast in Cape Coast.

He said government will support the language laboratory to become a Centre of Language Studies in the sub-region.

The University of Cape Coast Language Laboratory now known as the Amissah-Arthur Language Centre, was initiated in 2000.

In 2003 and 2004, GETFund came to support it but it was abandoned until 2011 when the Bank of Ghana, headed Mr. Amissah-Arthur decided to finance and complete it.

The main auditorium of the language centre has been named after the former Vice Chancellor of the university and current Minister of Education, Prof. Jane Naana Opoku Agyeman.

It was part of the Bank’s social corporate responsibility to support public universities.

Other beneficiary universities are the University of Ghana and the University for Development Studies.

Vice President Amissah-Arthur appealed to corporate institutions to support the education sector to improve access.

The First Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Millison Narh, emphasised the importance of the language centre to the Bank and Ghana’s economy as a whole.

He said Ghana needs international experts to facilitate trade transactions, contract negotiations and technological transfer between Ghana and the rest of the world through translation of documents and interpretation of discussions at meetings. Therefore, the importance of the well-resourced University of Cape Coast Languages Centre cannot be over emphasised.

The Vice Chancellor of the University Of Cape Coast, Prof. Domwini Kuupole expressed gratitude to the Vice President and the Bank of Ghana for providing the ultra-modern edifice for the university. He appealed to corporate institutions and philanthropists to support the centre.

Vice President Amisaah-Arthur, the Chairman of the University of Cape Coast Council, Sam Nana Brew Butler, Prof. Kuupole, Mr Narh and other officials of the Bank of Ghana and the university toured sections of the language centre.
