The public relations office of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology has released a statement to applaud students who were given various degrees of awards.
According to the statement, as part of strategies to acknowledge the special contribution from students, staff and industrial partners in training the next generation of engineers, the College of Engineering (CoE) of Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) has held an awards ceremony.
The ceremony dubbed “College of Engineering Students and Industrial Partners’ Awards”, the third in the series since its inception in 2012, seeks to encourage students to work harder, according to Professor S. Innocent Ampadu, the Provost of CoE.
Prof. Ampadu noted that the students’ awards cover three categories for each of the fifteen programmes. The Excellent Student’s Award is given to any student who achieves a cumulative weighted average mark of 75.00 and above. The Best Student’s Award goes to the student with the highest cumulative weighted average mark in the class at the end of the 2014/2015 academic year.
The third award category which is known as the Most Improved Student’s Award is given to the student who made the highest incremental change in the cumulative weighted average. There is also the Special Student’s Awards that have been instituted by individuals or corporate bodies for students meeting certain criteria.
He lauded the efforts of the industrial partners of the College as key collaborators at improving the quality of students graduating from the College. He said they assisted in many ways by providing places for students’ vacation training, donating equipment and accessories for teaching and learning, refurbishing some of the teaching facilities and sometimes offering staff to assist in teaching.
Professor William Otoo Ellis, the Vice-Chancellor, in his remarks said KNUST as an institution believes that excellence is key in achieving her goals. He said in recognition of this, the University has started the excellence awards in research, teaching, and innovation to reward staff. It was his belief that with the help of all stakeholders the university can achieve the ultimate.
In the Special Student’s Awards category, Ngayi J’yrena Christauvy, Gyamfi Kwame Nana and Abotsi Obed Yaw Worlanyo received the Wood Group Award for Best Students in Mechanical Engineering. The Wood Group Award for Best Final Year Thesis in Civil Engineering went to Conta Fanta, while Adjei Godwin Tawiah and Garfo Selorm won the Best Thesis for Mechanical Engineering.
The Odebrecht Engineering Award for students with the highest cumulative weighted average in the first to final years was won by Vieira Gregory, Alhassan Basit Issah. Akude Dzidedi Aku and Agbetiameh Amanda Korlekie.
The ABP Consult Limited Engineering Design Award went to Group 11 and Appiah Sumah Michael as the individual recipient for 2015. The GN Electronics Award which seeks to encourage women who have defied all difficulties and are pursuing and excelling in an undergraduate degree programme in Electrical Engineering went to Amoah Amankwah Afia. For her prize, she received a monetary award and an opportunity to pay a three-day visit to the Groupe Nduom Industrial Estate.
The best Geotechnical Engineering student with interest and passion in the discipline, Samuella Denise Boadu received the Prof. Kumapley Memorial Award. The Prof. Jonas Addae Mensah Award in Chemical Engineering went to Amu Bernard Jojo.
The Prof. E.E.L. Wuddah-Martey Award, instituted by the Ghana Institution of Surveyors to the best graduating student of the Geomatic Engineering Department was received by Sulemana Ibrahim.
Boadi Acheampong Daniel and Kayumba Roger Michael also received the S.W. Kuranchie Award, instituted by the Land Surveying Division of the Ghana Institution of Surveyors to the best graduating student of the Geomatic Engineering Department. Obiniran Roqeeb Olabiran received the Ghana Institution of Engineers’ Award. Teams Silo, Inginex and Green Power were presented the College Design Award
Odebrecht, Wood Group, Tropical Cables and Conductors Limited and Schlumberger were given awards in the corporate division as industrial award winners 2015.
