Akatsi North District initiates locally funded school feeding program

Akatsi North District, one of the new districts in the Volta Region, created in 2012, has initiated its own locally funded school feeding program to augment what is already being operated by government.

The move according to the District Chief Executive, forms part of innovative programs to enhance the economic fortunes of inhabitants who are mostly farmers and also improve enrollment in schools.

Out of about 30 basic schools in the district, 12 schools are benefiting from the central government’s school feeding program. The District Assembly has taken up the school meals of additional 10 schools in its own school feeding program targeting about 3,000 school children.Hon. James Gunu disclosed this at a durbar to climax the Assembly’s four years anniversary. The anniversary sought to among other things showcase the achievements of the district within its four years of existence and also evaluate the activities of the Assembly at improving the livelihood of inhabitants.

Apart from the construction of a six semi-detached staff bungalows, a 3-bedroom self-contain for the District Director, A fire Station, 27-room District Assembly hall complex , a 40-room three-storey shopping center, Classroom blocks and Health Centres in some communities, the assembly also introduced the district level public accountability forum, a local Economic Development Fund, interventions for persons with disabilities in the district and established Girl Child Education Clubs to enhance the education of females in the district.

The Assembly was carved out of the erstwhile Akatsi District under Legislative Instrument 2161 in March 2012, and was inaugurated in June the same year.

The well attended ceremony saw speaker after speaker including the Deputy  Volta Regional Minister, Francis Komla Ganyaglo, commending chiefs in the Ave traditional area and the staff of the assembly for the enormous commitment and contribution in bringing the Akatsi North District this far.
