‘Adanu HAPPI MEAL PROGRAM’ Feeds Pupils at Hehekpoe

The KG 1 & 2 students in Hehekpoe were fed by ‘ADANU’, a Non-Governmental Organisation.

Adanu – which means “wise collaboration” ,their main objective is to build schools in rural Ghana using education to transform children’s lives – and entire villages – forever.
One aspect of their HAPPI Model was a meal program for students. As first of its once a week meal program, which was held at Hehekpoe, is Set to continue on every Wednesday of each week. Adanu staff Robert Tornu, happily donated the first ingredients to make this meal possible: Bambara beans and red oil Gari made from cassava.

These ingredients prepared a complete balance meal. Robert also donated 70 bowls for the children to eat in. The meal was prepared with firewood donated by the Hehekpoe’s Head-teacher, with the parents utilizing their own cooking pots. The excitement was visible, with the children and their parents’ smiles as they helped with serving the meals and washing the bowls. The WASH program was also at full display providing the children with soap and water to wash their hands before and after their meal.

The students expressed their happiness about not having to go home hungry to look for food that was not there because their parents had to go to the farm.

The parents were full of praise and glad that the feeding program had started. Their goal is do their best to keep it going every Wednesday with the intention of extending the number of days if their income increased.

The teachers were happy to address the fact that a well fed child is likely to concentrate and learn more.

  • Everyone described the day as a new era of opportunities where hunger is reduced by a day with the hope that it will be sustain and expanded in the future.
  • The children can’t wait for October 21st the day of the next meal.
  • The Head-teacher could not hide his excitement and promised to provide the ingredients for the next meal.
  • The parents can’t wait to also start providing the ingredients and at the same time prepare the meals for their own children.

Parents have shown commitment and they believe that a satisfied child in the classroom will bring the best out come through academic excellence. Kudos to parent, teachers, children and Adanu for kicking off this program through HAPPI.
